Early Life and Family Background

Mohammad Yousuf is a well-known Pakistani cricketer and coach who left an indelible mark on the world of cricket.

Mohammad Yousuf was born in Lahore, Punjab, on August 27, 1974. He grew up in a Christian family, and his dad worked at the railway station. Their family didn’t have much money, and that made it hard for him to buy cricket equipment.

His journey into the world of cricket began with playing street cricket with his brother. At the age of 12, he was discovered by the Golden Gymkhana, which marked the beginning of his cricketing journey.

The Golden Gymkhana saw his talent and invited him to join their team. He also became a student at Lahore’s Forman Christian College. He was on the path to becoming a cricket star.

But then, in 1994, he suddenly stopped playing. Because his family didn’t have much money, Yousuf had to work at a tailor shop to help out.

However one day, he got a call from a local club that needed players for a match. In that game, he scored a century.

Then his club got a chance to play in the Bradford Cricket League, and that’s when Mohammad Yousuf was back in the game, on his way to becoming a cricket legend.

Conversion to Islam

Before his conversion to Islam in 2005, Yousuf was one of the few Christians to represent the Pakistan national cricket team. He accepted Islam after attending Tablighi Jamaat’s preaching sessions, a non-political religious group.

Yousuf’s conversion was his personal choice, and he changed his name from Yousuf Youhana to Mohammad Yousuf.

Mohammad Yousaf International Career

Yousuf made his Test and One Day International (ODI) debuts against South Africa and Zimbabwe, respectively. Over his career, he scored more than 9,000 ODI runs with an average above 40 and over 7,000 Test runs with an average above 50. Which includes 24 centuries to his name.

Yousuf’s golden year came in 2006 when he scored a world-record 1,788 runs in Test cricket with an amazing average of almost 100. He also broke multiple records previously held by legends like Viv Richards, scoring nine Test centuries in a single calendar year.

His exceptional performance in 2006 earned him several awards, including being named CNN-IBN’s Cricketer of the Year and Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2007. He was also recognized as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year in 2007.
